The frontiers in infertility research across the world are addressing different facets of the matter. The contemporary fertility treatment has its limitations. The present research tries to overcome those. For eg., sperm freezing is widely adopted but the procedure of freezing and subsequent thawing alters the DNA make up of the sperms triggering problems like apoptosis. Research is trying to invent better cryo- preservation techniques.
Another field of research is the study of sperm motility and try better understand the protein makeup and try ways to enhance motility of sperms.
Good news for women cancer patients is that if they have their ovaries frozen before radiotherapy or chemotherapy, there is a possibility of these ovaries being able to produce eggs that can be fertilized externally. However, the research has not had 100% success.
Studies are also trying to establish the correlation between PCO disorder and diabetes. Some studies have shown that insulin helps to cure PCO. Endometreosis, Premature Ovarian Failure, Preterm labour are all being studied with the focus on interplay of hormones.
But, perhaps the most refreshing news is that stem cells have extensive potentials in infertility treatment.
